Our Story (Katie's Version)

Once upon a time…

A girl named Katie went to the Memorial Union to get a new photo ID, and a boy named David got in line behind her.  She wouldn’t learn until much later that he already had his ID.  It was their first week of medical school, and while in line the talked about where they were from and what they studied in undergrad.  As they got near the front of the line the photo ID office closed for the day, which was lucky for David.

The next day David asked Katie if she would like to be part of a study group that he was setting up, so she wrote down her email address in his planner.  Their new study group met Friday of the first week of school. Soon, David started sitting next to Katie, front and center in the lecture hall, every day during class.

A couple of weeks later (9/4/2009) he asked her out, and the next Friday they went on their first date.  They walked along the lake to a bench with a beautiful view and sat for a while and talked.  Then they went to Five Guys for a burger and grilled cheese.  Before heading back to school for their study group they walked through Chazen art museum.  After study group they found an empty room and watched Love Actually on the projector.  The next weekend they went to the farmers’ market and then on Monday (9/21/2009) during lecture, David asked Katie to be his girlfriend, and she said yes.

They continued to spend more and more time together.  They watched movies together.  They walked to school holding hands.  They met each other’s families and spent holidays together.  They went to zoos together.  They went to Walleye weekend, twice, and got to hold a baby white tiger.  They spent time with each other’s friends.  They went to a national medical conference.  They studied.  They went to plays and musicals.  They played card games.  They went to the arboretum.  They worked out at the campus gym. They fell in love.

On September 2, 2011 Katie went out to dinner with two of her friends.  Only, when the three of them got to the restaurant David was there and her friends left. Katie thought David was still in Whitehall and wouldn’t be back in Madison for a few hours.  He had been planning to surprise her for weeks.  They shared a romantic dinner at The Melting Pot.  After dinner, there was a horse and carriage waiting for them in the parking lot.  David had arranged for a carriage ride through Madison and along the lake.  The ride ended at the bench where they had sat and talked on their first date.  The bench was nicely covered with a Precious Moments blanket (Katie had always loved Precious Moments), had roses in a blue vase (Katie’s favorite color), and had candles on either side.  They looked out at the beautiful view over the lake.  Then, almost exactly two years after he first asked her out on a date, David got down on one knee and asked Katie to marry him, and she said yes.

…and they lived happily every after!

Our Story (David's Version)

Once upon a time...

On the first day of medical school, everyone is nervous and unsure of what exactly this experience will be about. One of the many requirements is that students need to get their student IDs. That is where this story begins. Earlier that day David had already gotten his photo ID, but he decided to follow the crowd to talk to people as they waited to get their IDs anyway. Then he saw her, the most beautiful woman he ever saw. He got up the courage to join her in line and started talking to Katie. At first he thought she wasn't interested. Following his heart, David asked Katie later that week if she would like to study with him and a few other students from their class. She said, "Yes," and over the course of a few days they got to know each other better. After a nice walk along the lake and a movie, the seed was planted and they began to fall in love. As time progressed, their love only grew stronger until they no longer wanted to live as two separate souls but wanted to become unified in marriage.

...And they lived happily ever after.
